Captions of the prologue flash onto the screen as the prologue is said for the second time in a deeper, stronger, more powerful voice. This introduction is very dramatic with its use of cutaway, pan and exterior shot sequences.Baz Luhrmann has shown straight away that this is a modern adaptation of ‘Romeo and Juliet’ and this film heavily involves religion, only within the introduction. What's more, is that when Romeo was at the ball he was recognized by Tybalt, Juliet’s cousin, from the sound of his voice in the play, but in the movie Tybalt sees him.

In 1997, a movie was adapted from the play “Romeo and Juliet”, directed by Baz Lurhmann. They use young actors and actresses to appeal to the younger audience at the time that they were released, but it is obvious to see the generation gap between them. The first noticeable difference is in the films title. As soon as the newsreader finishes the prologue, a gothic requiem is heard loudly, and there is a fast zoom shot of a statue of Christ. This is followed by a sequence of fast shots and views of Verona, similar to the idea of Zefirellis panning shots of Verona.Later on, in Act 3, Scene 1, both Houses have reached a climax of such vengeance that this scene results in the death of Mercutio, Romeo’s best friend. The characters that are central in these scenes are; Of House capulet: Samspon, Gregory, Mercutio and Benvolio, and then Romeo in Act 3, Scene 3, and those of House Montague, Abraham, Balthasar and Tybalt.I was confused at first when I watched Luhrman’s version, as he has swapped the Capulet and Montague roles; originally in the first fight scene Sampson and Gregory begin the scene and the script enters them as Capulets and Zefferelli has decided to stick to the original shakespeare script, whereas in Luhrmans version he has given them the role of Montagues (same lines just a different name). An anchorwoman is seen reading the days news, but instead she is reading the original prologue.By doing this, Luhrmann has already shown the viewer that the film is set in modern times.Baz Luhrmann created his version thirty years later, in a modern style. There are many differences and similarities between the films, but each does not change the tale.
