Students will be instructed in the organization of information and in sophisticated search strategies for finding, evaluating, and using information. Keep a research journal/log: should include your database/search engine, search queries, printed results lists, and notes/comments on the research process (see Research Log) B.
A critical annotated bibliography is required, as well as a strategy for acquiring materials needed for the final project. What do you know, what do you want or need to know about the topic?
The High School Research Writing Course will explore the research process from the prewriting stage to the revision stage.
Students will plan and develop one research report, practicing and mastering each step of the research process before moving on to the next step.
In this phase, students begin to create an outline.
They also begin thinking about a thesis statement and a Works Cited page.It is useful to note that every scientific discipline, every university and even supervisors can have their own preferred methods of constructing reports; with this in mind, do not be afraid to ask for advice on the best research paper format for your report. For most assessed reports you will be told how long it should be, generally by the number of words.Writing a research paper is as important as performing the actual research or experiment itself and can appear to be a very daunting task.It does not matter what conclusions you arrived at or how perfect your experimentation was, if you put no effort into writing a good report then your study will not be taken seriously.Unit 4 – Preparing to Write After completing the outline, students start thinking about the first draft.Students list more key words, identify the best sources to use, begin making note cards, and create a “working” thesis statement. Unit 5 – Writing the Body of Your Paper Students refocus the thesis statement if necessary and write the body of their paper from their outline and notes.Unit 7 – Documenting Sources/Composing the Works Cited Page Students spend this week finalizing the citations and completing the Works Cited page.Any parenthetical citations must have a corresponding listing on the Works Cited page.Students must obtain approval from their academic advisor.
